Legend of the sacred stone
Hard-core fans of the Hong Kong action movie have in recent years watched what was once a geek obsession go mainstream, what with the success of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and the rise of HK stars such as Jackie Chan and Jet Li. But in the world of Asian cult cinema, there is always a weirder and more obscure Next Thing, and this year, that thing is Legend of the Sacred Stone, a Taiwanese film with all the trimmings of classic HK flicks: gleaming swords, gravity-defying kung fu, decapitations, indecipherable plotlines.
Oh, and one fairly major twist: It's done entirely with puppets. Though the trippy Sacred Stone is the first feature film to use Taiwanese glove puppetry, director Huang Wen-tse is just continuing with the family biz-his grandfather, 104-year-old Huang Hai-tai, introduced glove puppetry to Taiwanese TV audiences thirty years ago, and Sacred Stone uses characters from a wildly popular TV series in Taiwan.
"People stop work to watch the show," says Brian Cox of the Distant Horizon film company, which plans to release an English version of Sacred Stone next year. Fans are already ordering import DVDs on the Internet, and the hip Atlanta theater company Dad's Garage has been showing clips from the movie's climactic volcano-battle sequence before shows. Still, the skeptical might say:puppet fu? We say:Trust us. -M.B.
